You can even picture Ben Affleck's tongue wagging and legs spread in mid-jump, similar to his Airless in the masterfully crafted drama "Air" by Ben Affleck.

Similar to "Moneyball" before it, "Air" (available on Amazon Prime Video) focuses more on the business of sports than the actual games themselves, yet the main storyline is nearly as exciting as a nail-biting conclusion. A Cinderella story for dads, dudes, and protective moms, too, the film is a gripping tale with a rich reserve of talent (most notably Matt Damon and Viola Davis) and a shoe at its center. It exudes 1980s style and finds something to say about the importance of athletes that still rings true today.

Shoe firms are rushing to recruit rookies to endorsement deals in 1984 after the NBA Draft, and Nike's predicament is worse than most. The company is known for its running gear and is led by high-strung, philosophical Phil Knight (Affleck), but its basketball business, which is in danger of being eliminated, is in desperate need of star power. Although the majority of the big men have already signed with other teams, Scrubby basketball scout Sonny Vaccaro (Damon) is chosen to find the court stars who can lead Nike to the promised land with only $250,000 to spend on a few players.

Jordan was selected by the Chicago Bulls with the third overall choice, and although snobby agent David Flak (Chris Messina) claims that Jordan would represent Adidas, Sonny senses something special in the slender North Carolina native. Jordan's parents Deloris (Davis) and James (Davis' real-life husband Julius Ten non) live in Wilmington, and Sonny, willing to take a chance on his job and remembering what his coworker Howard White (Chris Tucker) told him about the strength of a Black mother, travels from Nike's Oregon headquarters to Wilmington to meet with them.

While Deloris doesn't play games, she acknowledges Sonny's strong push and considers his point of view as time runs out for Nike to sign this game-changing superstar.

The majority of sports fans and sneaker heads who have purchased a pair of Air Jordans in the last four decades are aware of how the narrative ends, but Affleck and screenwriter Alex Convey manage to maintain just the appropriate level of ticktock tension. The fun is in the journey, with dramatic scrambling within Nike as Knight debates being a maverick shoe firm against having pleased shareholders, and Deloris keeping up her tough exterior as the Jordana meet all the suitors. Even though we're discussing corporate brands, the rivalry between Converse, Adidas, and Nike is comparable to a Lakers vs. Celtics playoff game, and Affleck leans into it in a way that will appeal to the audience.

Affleck's barefooted boss is just one of the vibrant supporting performances that boost "Air." Jason Bateman co-stars as a snarky Nike marketing executive who has a real interest in Jordan's potential signing; Matthew Maher is amusingly eccentric as the mad scientist who invented the legendary shoes; and Tucker, adds a humorous element to the film as White, who, along with assistant Olympic coach George Raveling (Marlon Wayans), is a significant factor in determining Jordan's final decision.

Together, Damon and Davis are incredible. Sonny won't accept a no when it comes to this once-in-a-lifetime talent, and Deloris is open-minded and truthful about her son's future and how great he really is. It's interesting how Affleck portrays Jordan as a figure who is largely a spectator; you never see his face; instead, you concentrate on the wheels moving around him. Jordan's hoops prowess is showcased in one scene that simultaneously gives a critical moment weight and, in a manner, detracts from it. Depending on how devoted you are to MJ, your results may differ.)

With the exception of "Live by Night" Affleck has a solid track record as a director, and "Air" an underdog tale starring the greatest basketball player ever, feels like his most creative work to yet.
